What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique name for a location on the Internet.Domain names exist to enable users to find web sites on the Internet without having to remember 12 digit numbers(IP addresses). The domain name you type into your browser - www.intervations.com.au, for example - is merely the "user friendly" representation of its Internet address [also known as it's "IP Address"] of 205.214.226.217 .

The process of converting the domain name - www.intervations.com.au - into its equivalent IP address - 205.214.226.217 - is undertaken by the "DNS". The DNS [Domain Name System] is a global listing of Internet domain names and their IP addresses. When you type an address into your browser your PC first goes to the DNS system to obtain the IP address for that site. Once it has the IP address the browser then connects to the web site.
